Carpentry

If you are building, renovating or updating your home, you may require a Carpenter to build and assemble the wooden structures. A carpenter will build walls, frames, shelving, doors, and anything related to wood in a house. Carpenters also work on finishing, such as skirting, architrave, ironmongery and floors. These are our roles as carpenters, our jobs mean we usually work around other trades and can offer consultation on any matters.

Flooring is one of our most common jobs; we work with wood or vinyl boards and make sure the floor stays down and together. Wood and floor in general likes to expand and shrink with the heat; this can cause problems with the floor. Flooring can pop up if it hasn’t enough room to move; it can sometimes pop apart and form gaps along the lengths. We have to be thorough and patient to prevent this from happening.

Finishing with wood includes fixing doors, architrave, skirting and preparing the final touches before painting; these jobs are usually part of the second fix. You may hear this term from other trades; it means jobs left until after the messy jobs. We will need everyone to finish their first fix before we can start; because we require the plasterboard up and all the pipes and wires to be behind the wall.

Door frames and stud walls are part of the first fix; it is easier for us to build these when there is space and before other tradespeople get started.

Doors are likely to move after fitting because the change in heat can warp the wood; this will cause the locks to need refitting. The ironmongery, the locks, handles and hinges are fitted in the second fix and are done by the carpenter even though they are metal. Sometimes doorstops may need to be added to the frames after the door is hung; this depends if the door frame doesn’t already include them.

Roofs are a complicated job that only an experienced carpenter can do. There are a lot of heavy timbers that need cutting and fixing at specific angles; a second carpenter or apprentice will usually help with the lifting and fitting of the timbers.

Other jobs a carpenter can do include building fences, construction shuttering and assembling kitchens. A carpenter can help you on your construction project; they work on many different jobs and can help you finish your project.
